Jorge and Maria live in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. Jorge was born in Obregon, but he moved around a lot, including living in the US for 17 years. He has three grown children from a previous marriage. Maria is originally from Jalisco, but was living in Sonoyta when she met Jorge. They have been married for 12 years and have five children. All of the kids are in school except for Said who is still at home. Jorge was able to finish high school and has always had a passion for music. Currently he performs at various social functions in Peñasco. He has also started buying and selling fish as a business. Maria takes care of the home and their growing family. They have been paying for a land lot but have been unable to build a home on their own, and are currently living in a borrowed home. A house from 1MISSION would give this family a safe and secure place to live, where they could focus on meeting their daily needs and work towards a better future.
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
