Yesica has lived in Peñasco for her whole life. Ivan lived previously in Hermosillo, but has been in Peñasco for the past six years. They have three young daughters. Ivan works as a welder at La Herradura gold mine outside of Peñasco, and Yesica works as a vendor, selling food and second hand clothing. Their oldest daughter Silvia has some serious health issues and requires special care as well as frequent medical visits to Hermosillo. The family is currently living with Yesica’s mother, which means that nine people are all living in one room. Though they have been paying for a land lot, they are without the means to build their own home. They limited income combined with extra expenses related to Silvia’s health leave no extra funds to dedicate to building a home. A house from 1MISSION would give this hard working couple a place of their own where they can live in comfort with room to raise their daughters, and with an increased ability to focus their resources on seeing to their family’s daily needs.
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
