Enrique was born in Puerto Peñasco and was able to finish high school. He lived and worked in the US for a number of years, but returned to MX when his mother got sick and he was able to be with her for the last period of her life. He works in tourism in town, selling and promoting various tourist activities. This work is seasonal and Enrique’s income can be very inconsistent. He is a physical fitness instructor and spends a lot of time volunteering in various communities in Peñasco teaching health care, nutrition and physical conditioning. Because of his volunteer work, the city mayor granted Enrique a land lot, but he is unable to earn enough currently to be able to build a home on his own. He has been going from place to place, living with various friends and relatives but desires a home of his own. He has been very involved in the 1MISSION projects teaching Zumba and other physical health classes in the community to earn his hours.
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
