Humberto is originally from Hermosillo but has lived in Puerto Peñasco for the past seven years. His main employment is as a fisherman, but in the down season, he works in construction or whatever other type of work he can find. Because his work is seasonal, his income fluctuates a lot, and it is hard to count on a regular wage. Sarahi is originally from Caborca and has lived in Peñasco for the past 7 years. She and Humberto have been together for four years and have a two year old daughter, Merillel. After giving birth to her daughter, Sarahi was diagnosed with Leukemia. For the past two years she has been receiving chemotherapy treatments which necessitated numerous trips to Hermosillo for doctor’s appointments. Her illness put a huge strain on the family, not only emotionally and the obvious health strains, but financially as well. They have been living with Sarahi’s mother and were only recently able to begin making payments on a land lot. Having the means to build a safe and decent home on their own is not within reach for this family. A house from 1MISSION would give Humberto and Sarahi a safe and comfortable home in which to raise their daughter as well as provide a secure financial asset, allowing them to get back on their feet and to work towards a secure future.
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
