Reina and her daughter Emeli moved to Puerto Peñasco from Sinaloa a few years ago. Reina works cleaning houses, but is sometimes only able to earn around $35 a week. Reina’s daughter brought her seven year old daughter Yamileth and lived with Reina for a while. When she left, she left her Yamileth behind for Reina to raise. Yamileth’s parents occasionally send Reina a small amount of money to help with her expenses. When she first arrived in Peñasco, she spent a few months living with her sister and then with her brother. She also lived in a rented apartment for a few years. Her grandmother left her some money and four years ago, she was able to purchase a land lot that already had a small room. This is where she has been living since then. The room has been slowly deteriorating, and some of the walls are made out of dry wall and are so broken down that they offer very little security or protection from the elements. A house from 1MISSION would give Reina a safe and secure place to live with her daughter and granddaughter. It would allow her to focus her limited resources on meeting their daily needs, while working to create a more secure future. UPDATE: THE FAMILY IS EXCITED TO BE LIVING IN THEIR NEW HOME! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
