The Herrera Lopez family lives in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. Peñasco, or “Rocky Point” is a small city on the Sea of Cortez where the main industries are fishing and tourism. A mere 100km from the US border, its beautiful sandy beaches make it a popular weekend and holiday destination for many living in the Phoenix area. Jorge and Elena left the state of Michoacan 11 years ago, and migrated to the US hoping to create a better life for their family. They lived for 6 years in Phoenix, and when the time came for them to go back to Mexico, they decided to settle in Peñasco. Their oldest two children stayed in the US with their own families. The younger two, Jorge (16) and Abel (13) are with them and are both attending school. Jorge works as a security guard at a local resort and Elena stays home and looks after their family. For the past 5 years they have had to live in various places provided by relatives. They are currently living with Jorge’s mother, but their living quarters are very cramped with both families together. A home from 1MISSION would give this family a place they could call their own. It would give Jorge and Elena a safe and secure place to raise their sons, allowing them to focus their limited resources on keeping the boys in school and on meeting their basic needs. UPDATE: The family is now living in their new home!
