ABOUT THE FAMILY
Maria was born in the state of Nayarit where she lived with her family and finished up to the 9th grade. She left Nayarit and lived in Tijuana for five years. Recently, a sister invited her to move to Puerto Penasco, which is where she has lived since early 2018. Maria has two children, 14 year old Adriana and Raul who is 20. Their father is not involved with the family and has offered no support for a number of years. Adriana attends Jr. High, and Raul is unable to work. He has Down’s Syndrome, but is very independent and a hard worker. In order to support her family, Maria works two jobs, in a tortillaria as well as in housekeeping at Las Palomas Hotel. The family is currently living with Maria’s sister where they share the rent and other expenses. They would like to make Peñasco their permanent home and have purchased a land lot. A house from 1MISSION would ensure that Maria has a safe and secure place to care for her family. It would allow her to focus her resources on caring for her son and seeing Adriana through school, while giving her the security that comes with a home of her own.
HOW THIS FAMILY EARNED THEIR HOUSE
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
100% of donations from this campaign will go to 1MISSION's projects and programs in the field.
