Martha was born in Puerto Peñasco, where she has lived all of her life. She was married for 18 years to Julio Alfonso, but he passed away a number of years ago. They had four daughters, three of whom live on their own. Her daughter Adilene and her three children live with her. Darvin and Ashlin are in school, and 3 year old Dominic is still at home. Martha sells perfume and Adilene works in a local pharmacy. Martha is under medical treatment for diabetes and hypertension, creating an additional strain on her already meagre finances. They are currently living on Martha’s land lot in a house that is in very poor condition. It has been built with salvaged materials and drywall, and offers minimal security or protection from the elements. A house from 1MISSION would give Martha a safe and decent place to live, allowing her to continue to help her daughter and to work towards a more secure future.
Our Earning by Learning initiative gives families the opportunity to build at their own capacity while at the same time, furthering sustainable development in their own community. Families can participate in classes centered on home budgeting, gardening, sewing, basic education and much more. Families also become connected with their communities by participating in projects such as building each other’s homes, cleaning their neighborhoods, and serving in local schools and churches. This sustainable approach results in community development that multiplies from neighbor to neighbor. By participating in their community, families not only work together, but they feel the support of their neighbors and develop relationships of trust and shared burdens.
